A free expense tracker and budget planner that stays on your device
CheckPenny's expense tracker helps you see where your money goes each month. Add your income and your regular costs, choose how often each one is paid, and the tool works out your monthly income, monthly expenses and surplus. Charts show your spending by category, how your income is split, and your biggest individual expenses.
There is nothing to sign up for and no bank connection. Everything is calculated in your browser, so your numbers are never sent to us.
How it works
- Enter your income after tax, then your regular costs in each category.
- Pick a frequency for each line: weekly, fortnightly, monthly, quarterly or yearly.
- Read your monthly totals and charts. Adjust any line to see how the surplus changes.
- Optionally save your data on this device, or export a backup file.
Frequently asked questions
Is this expense tracker really free?
Yes. There is no sign-up, no account and no paid tier. Open the page and start typing.
Where is my data stored?
Only in your own browser. Nothing you enter is sent to a server. By default your numbers disappear when you close the tab; switch on "Remember my data on this device" to keep them in this browser, or use Export to download a backup file.
How does it convert weekly, fortnightly or yearly amounts to a monthly figure?
Each amount is scaled to a full year and divided by 12. Weekly amounts are multiplied by 52, fortnightly by 26, quarterly by 4 and yearly by 1, then divided by 12. That is why a $100 weekly cost shows as about $433 a month, not $400.
Can I move my data to another device?
Yes. Use Export JSON to download a file, then use Import on the other device. Saved data does not sync between browsers or devices on its own.
What should I include in my expenses?
Start with the regular costs already listed, such as rent or mortgage, rates, utilities, groceries, insurance, transport and subscriptions, then add your own lines. Irregular costs like holidays or car registration work well entered as a yearly amount.
Is this financial advice?
No. The tracker gives general information only and does not consider your personal circumstances. For decisions about money, speak to a licensed financial adviser or accountant.
